Your Guide to Creating the Ultimate Insta-Worthy Kitchen
If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a new fitted kitchen, chances are you’ll have scoured Instagram for ideas and inspiration for your virtual mood board. With literally millions of home and interiors accounts to follow, it is easy to get lost down a kitchen-shaped rabbit hole, falling in love with the homes of random strangers on the internet and wishing that you could recreate the same look in your own kitchen.
While scrolling through endless photos, certain trends do start to become apparent, with many of the homes featured on Instagram having key features in common. Kitchen islands, quartz worktops, Farrow and Ball paint, and of course bi-fold doors all feature prominently in the #kitchensofinstagram, but a bit of number crunching reveals these aren’t actually the most popular Instagram trends.
Using hashtag research and search trends, one kitchen supplier has identified the most popular kitchen design trends on Instagram so far this year. From layouts to colours, flooring to worktops, these are the biggest Instagram kitchen trends of the moment:
#WhiteKitchen
With a massive 617,537 posts, white is very much still the colour of choice on Instagram, providing a light, bright and crisp look which works well in any space. This is a particularly popular choice for our friends across the pond in the United States, where the New England style of décor remains hugely popular. Often teamed with natural materials like wooden flooring, this look is certainly timelessly stylish.
Whilst white remains an ever popular choice here in the UK too, from our work with clients it feels as though people are opting for bolder colour palettes, with grey being one of the most popular neutrals, and dark blue fast becoming a go-to favourite. This is reflected in the stock colour options of many of our kitchen ranges, which are in sync with the most commonly requested tones.
The beauty of a Kitchenroom kitchen is that it can be painted in absolutely any colour you wish, from bright white to magenta, so we can help you make sure you achieve the perfect tone and look!
#ShakerKitchen
You’d have to have been hiding under a rock not to know that Shaker Style kitchens are incredibly fashionable at the moment, and that’s evidenced all over Instagram, with the hashtag “#shakerkitchen” having 84,974 posts and “#shakercabinets” having 81,355. Shaker style cabinets have been popular for many, many years, but seem to be having a real moment in the sun, with the likes of Mrs Hinch, Davina McCall and Mollie King all showing off their traditional shaker cabinets recently on Instagram.
Shaker Style cabinets have remained ever-popular, in our opinion, due to their versatility. Whether you want a modern look, or a very traditional farmhouse kitchen shaker units work brilliantly, with colour choice and accessories having the power to really alter their look. At Kitchenroom we have a fantastic range of Shaker Style kitchens to choose from, made from a variety of materials and at different pricing levels. For the ultimate Shaker Style kitchen we’d recommend looking at our in-frame designs – another big Instagram trend!
#HerringboneFloor
Wooden flooring has been around for years, but laying it in a herringbone design is most definitely a trend born of the Instagram era. Search trends have seen an increase of 160% for the term “Herringbone floor” in the past year, with 83,000 posts on Instagram using the hashtag “#herringbonefloor”. It’s a trend we can really get on board with as it’s a fantastic way of bringing interest and a sense of space into a room. Whether you have a large open-plan space, or a galley style kitchen, herringbone flooring can help make the space feel larger as the directional planks help to draw the eye outwards.
Herringbone flooring is available in a variety of different materials, with real wood, specifically oak, being the most tagged on Instagram. That isn’t always the most budget friendly option however, so we’d recommend looking at a man-made option such as Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) as an alternative. LVT is incredibly hard-wearing and realistic looking and comes in a variety of colours, styles and sizes so works well for most rooms. Take a look at Karndean for inspiration.
#GraniteWorktops
A massive 22,700 Instagram posts are tagged with #graniteworktops. It has long been a popular choice due to its durability and the number of options of colours and styles. We too love the look of granite, but have found that it is being over-taken in popularity by Quartz, which is a very similar looking, man-made alternative. Quartz is made by combining around 90 percent ground quartz (a natural hard mineral) with eight to 10 percent resins, polymers, and pigments. This forms a very hard surface, which is even more durable and hard-wearing than the naturally found granite.
Like granite, quartz is available in a number of different styles and colours. As it is a man-made substance, there are an almost endless amount of options, including things such as marble effect, and crisp white, both of which are big Instagram trends at the moment.
We have a number of quartz and granite samples available which we can share with you as part of your free home design visit, so you can see and feel the differences first hand.
#GalleyKitchen
If you weren’t expecting Galley Kitchens to be one of the biggest Instagram trends, you surely won’t be alone, however it reflects the reality of the types of homes most of us really live in! As much as we all love large open plan spaces, complete with banquette seating and kitchen islands, that isn’t the reality for most of us and it’s great to see that being reflected on Instagram. #GalleyKitchen is the most tagged kitchen layout style on the platform, with 19,600 posts and counting.
A galley kitchen is usually utilised in a smaller space, with two parallel rows of units and work surfaces, maximising the usable kitchen space available. This Instagram trend shows just how impactful galley kitchens can be, with a huge number of swoon-worthy examples available for your to pour over.
If you’ve got a smaller kitchen space or a galley kitchen, it’s worth having a think about all the ways you can increase the sense of space. Whether it’s through choosing colours and finishes which reflect and distribute natural light, or clever space-saving and storage tools to help you keep work surfaces clear.
